The Rehnquist Court lasted from 1986 to 2005, during the presidencies of Ronald Reagan, George H.W. Bush, Bill Clinton, and George W. Bush.Rehnquist was nominated as Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States by President Ronald Reagan on June 20, 1986.

Fifteen years later President Ronald Reagan named him as the court’s Chief Justice, a position that he held until his death in 2005. During the last eleven years of his term on the Court, there was not a single change in the roster of nine justices. William Hubbs Rehnquist (1924–2005) was appointed to the Supreme Court in 1972 by President Richard M. Nixon. In 1986 President Ronald Reagan elevated Rehnquist to chief justice, a position he held until his death in 2005.
